Destination story

Tanjung Puting in Central Kalimantan is one of the best places to see Bornean orangutans in their natural habitat. The journey is usually made by klotok, a multi-deck wooden boat that doubles as a dining and sleeping space, up the Sekonyer River from Kumai.

Camp Leakey, founded in the early 1970s by researcher Biruté Galdikas, is the main destination. At feeding times run by the rangers, semi-wild orangutans are often seen; proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and other wildlife can be found along the river.

Sleeping on the river, with the sounds of the night forest and a sky full of stars, makes this trip different from ordinary wildlife tours. Follow the national park rules: don't feed the animals and keep a safe distance.

Why visitSpend the night on a boat in the middle of the rainforest and meet orangutans face to face.
