Destination story

The Baliem Valley is around Wamena, the capital of Highland Papua, at an altitude of about 1,600 metres among the Jayawijaya mountains. Wamena can only be reached by air because no road connects it directly to the coast.

The Dani, Lani, and Yali peoples live in this valley. Round thatched-roof houses, honai, are scattered across the villages, and footpaths link the villages to sweet potato gardens. Some villages still keep traditions such as the stone-burning feast.

The peak of activity is the Baliem Valley Festival, usually held in August, with traditional mock-war performances. Visits need to be coordinated with local guides and respect local customs.

Why visitGet to know Papua's highland culture in a high valley cut off from overland routes.
