Destination story
Kawah Putih is a crater lake on Mount Patuha, in the Ciwidey area of Bandung Regency. The water colour shifts from turquoise-green to bluish white depending on sulphur content and weather. The thin mist that often rolls in makes the atmosphere feel otherworldly.
It is cool and sits in the highlands more than 2,000 metres above sea level, about one and a half to two hours from Bandung. The route passes tea plantations and pine forests; nearby Situ Patenggang and Ranca Upas can be added for a full day.
Because the smell of sulphur can irritate breathing, the managers usually recommend not staying too long and warn visitors with respiratory problems.
