Destination story

Krakatau erupted violently in 1883 and collapsed to form a caldera in the Sunda Strait. About four decades later, in the late 1920s, a new volcano rose from the seabed and has kept growing: Anak Krakatau. The area is part of the Krakatau Nature Reserve and Marine Nature Reserve in South Lampung.

The trip usually starts from the pier in Kalianda, South Lampung, with a speedboat ride of about one and a half to two hours. Along the way, the blue sea gives way to volcanic island scenery, and visitors usually stop at nearby islands for snorkelling.

Important note: Anak Krakatau's activity changes. A landslide in December 2018 triggered a tsunami in the Sunda Strait and changed the shape of the mountain. Access is determined by the volcanic status from PVMBG, so make sure you use official routes and a trusted operator before you go.

Why visitWitness a volcano born from one of the most famous eruptions in world history, straight from the sea.
